Position Summary:

The Ryan Company Inc. seeks an Electrical Engineer-Power Systems in Greenwood Village, CO to confers with senior engineers, customers or others for utility scale power plant projects including estimation of site generation potential & development of preliminary feasibility studies.

Job Description:

  • Prepares technical scope of work to support project EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracts, construction subcontracts & RFPs

  • Conducts design review processes & assists in preparation of technical proposals to business development department. Supports company legal department in negotiations for contract agreements with clients & vendors

  • Performs project technical risks & assists in financial & economic analysis with uncertainty analysis for energy output

  • Evaluates power plant performance using software modeling tools such as PVWATTS, PVSYST, & SAM

  • Detailed design calculation & system performance verification using software package like ETAP

  • Conducts system design & engineering of PV power system including inverter & solar PV module sizing & balance of system component selection to satisfy technical aspects, market/customer requirements, interconnection utility load conditions & safety, regulatory and quality standards

  • Designs utility scale solar PV (Photovoltaic) plants and components per latest NEC and NESC requirements and local AHJ regulations

  • Liaises with utility regarding interconnection approval process, technical issues and prospective solutions to achieve cost effective interconnection configuration

  • Generates all aspects of required engineering documentation: Permit Ready IFC (Issue for construction) Drawings using CAD program (one-line, layouts etc.), technical specifications, bill of materials, material requisition, installation, operation and maintenance and user manuals for PV power plant components/subsystems

  • Liaises with project managers and internal/external electrical and civil engineers, providing project schedule development, project management support services and engineering support during pre-construction, construction and commissioning phases and through timely completion of project

  • Design development of DAS (Data Acquisition System)/SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and communication cable specifications development

  • Applies current and emerging solar PV industry technology trends and developments/changes to implement project requirements

  • Prepares technical/financial correspondence with Inverter, PV module and BoS components and Medium Voltage Equipment manufacturers

  • Studies latest IEEE and UL standard updates related to equipment & keep record of such changes that may affect project requirements

  • Develops QA-QC methods and standard procedures to correlate onsite measurements with reference data & overall plant commissioning procedures

  • Some travel required. Less than 5% Travel

  • Must be able to acquire PE license

  • No relocation expenses paid by company


Knowledge and Skills:

Skills required: PVWATTS, PVSYST, ETAP, CAD software for development of construction ready drawings, DAS (Data Acquisition System)/SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition); Use of Microsoft office products for creation of project technical specifications & documentation


  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, or closely related field, or foreign equivalent degree

  • Minimum Experience: Four years (48 months) with power systems including utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems & voltaic systems; Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including instrumentation specification, logic diagram, graphics and wiring drawings, database maintaining; metering systems, power and revenue meters, measuring transformers Battery Energy Storage (BESS) design and engineering; preparation of construction ready design packages, SOWs, feasibility studies and RFP presentations for solar PV power systems; (including required design calculations); procurement; contract negotiation; project risk and economic analysis

  • Must have minimum 1 year of QAQC testing
